Defendant Convicted for Massage Parlor Robberies, Attempted Sexual Assault

James Curtis Kern was convicted by a jury of kidnapping to commit another crime, assault with intent to commit sexual assault, robbery, attempted robbery and petty theft.
In the summer of 2022, Kern visited four different massage parlors and demanded a massage and sexual services. When he was turned down, he either stole from the business or he robbed, attempted to rob or attempted to sexually assault the female employee he had contacted. On one occasion, he robbed a female victim, dragged her to the back of the business and attempted to rape her. When another massage parlor employee recognized Kern from surveillance video posted on online, she came forward and police were able to identify Kern as the suspect.
Kern faces a maximum sentence of 15 years and two months to life in prison. Sentencing is set for March 8, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. in Department 10 before the Honorable Ernest Sawtelle.
