Advocacy services are available throughout the court process for victims of domestic violence. The Domestic Violence Unit has skilled and experienced victim advocates who provide crisis and short-term counseling, court accompaniment and support, updated case status, safety planning, as well as information regarding domestic violence and the criminal justice system.
Victim advocates are also available to offer assistance in preparing a victim impact statement at the sentencing, assistance in obtaining emergency services such as food, clothing and shelter, assistance in completing a temporary restraining order, and filing an application with the state Victims of Crime compensation board for crime-related expenses (e.g., long-term counseling, domestic violence relocation funds, medical/dental reimbursement).
The victim advocate can also assist victims of domestic violence and stalking in applying for confidential identity through the Secretary of State’s Safe at Home Program. Stalking victims can also receive additional protective services (i.e., aware alarm, etc.). Additional information and training can be provided by victim advocates upon request to agencies within the community (e.g., speaking engagements and outreach).
