Crime Lab Internships

The laboratory offers student intern, graduate intern, and other volunteer programs to individuals who wish to work in the laboratory for a limited period of time to gain valuable experience. Internship opportunities are generally only offered during the summer months and are non-paid. Project availability will vary depending on the needs of the laboratory.

Student Interns are university level students with at least two years of college experience majoring in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, physics, pharmacology, microbiology, criminalistics (with emphasis in chemistry), or a closely related scientific field. These interns work under the direction of an analyst on a specific technical or nontechnical project.

Graduate Interns are graduate level students who work under the direction of an analyst on a specific technical project. At the end of the project, these interns supply the laboratory with a copy of their thesis and present their research to laboratory staff.

The following is the general schedule for student and graduate intern programs:

  • January/February – Accept internship applications

  • March – Intern interviews

  • April/May – Intern background checks

  • Late May/June – Summer interns begin projects
