On June 20, 2025, the Honorable James Arguelles sentenced Julian Maurice Brooks to 79 years to life in prison. On May 1, 2025, Brooks was convicted by a jury of first-degree murder and felon in possession of a firearm. The jury further found true a use of a firearm causing death allegation. Brooks also admitted to an allegation that he has a prior strike conviction for robbery.
Julian Maurice Brooks was a former co-worker and friend of the victim, Mark Moton. Brooks and the victim were in an ongoing feud. On June 1, 2023, Brooks showed up at the victim’s apartment and waited for him to leave for work. Brooks then confronted the victim and forced him back into his residence at gunpoint while threatening to kill him. When the victim retrieved his own handgun inside his apartment to defend himself, Brooks shot the victim twice. When Brooks began attacking the victim with his hands, the victim’s family members fought Brooks off until he left. Brooks was soon apprehended on the apartment complex premises.
