CASE: Rand Hawkins Jr. (Case #22FE009774)

PROSECUTOR: Deputy District Attorney Nick Triplett, Felony Trial Unit

On August 1, 2024,  Rand Hawkins Jr. was convicted by a jury of assault with a semi-automatic firearm and being a felon in possession of a firearm. The jury found true allegations that Hawkins used a firearm and inflicted great bodily injury.  In a separate trial, the Court found true allegations that Hawkins has three prior strike convictions for robbery.

On June 13, 2022, Sacramento sheriff’s deputies responded to a ShotSpotter activation at 48th Ave. and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. When they arrived, they found the victim covered in blood and bleeding profusely from his left leg. Dashcam video from a nearby car showed a suspect in a white Chevy Suburban drive up to the victim and open fire on him before driving off. Bystanders were able to able to point out the suspect vehicle to deputies, who later located the vehicle.  Four hours after the shooting, Hawkins approached the deputies and surrendered.  The Sacramento District Attorney’s Crime Lab tested all of the shell casings found at the shooting scene and determined that they all were fired from a gun that was found in the Chevy Suburban.

Hawkins faces a maximum sentence of 55 years to life in prison.  Sentencing is set for September 6, 2024, at 9:00 a.m. in Department 13 before the Honorable Benjamin Galloway.
