PROSECUTOR: Deputy District Attorney Denise Halstead, Adult Sexual Assault Unit
On June 7, 2024, the Honorable Maryanne Gilliard sentenced Shauku Daryl Barksdale to 16 years in prison. On February 5, 2024, a jury convicted Barksdale of rape by force.
The victim and her boyfriend were renting a room in a residence where Barksdale and his girlfriend also lived. On February 3, 2019, the victim’s boyfriend left the residence after the two argued. Barksdale also left with his girlfriend, who is confined to a wheelchair. He returned to the residence after leaving his girlfriend in the car. Barksdale then went to the victim’s room and raped her. Barksdale denied touching the victim, but DNA linked him to the sexual assault.
