Defendant Convicted of Fatal Shooting in South Sacramento

Demonte Smith was convicted by a jury of second-degree murder. The jury also found true the allegation that Smith personally and intentionally used a firearm causing death.
On November 7, 2021, the victim, Deondre Taylor, was approached by two men. A physical altercation ensued, which ended with the victim being shot in the chest as he tried to run away from the men. The two men fled in a van driven by a third person. The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene. Subsequent investigation revealed surveillance video of the shooting and witnesses who confirmed Smith’s identity and his involvement in the murder. The gun used in the murder was never recovered.
Smith faces a maximum sentence of 40 years to life in prison. Sentencing is set for September 6, 2023, at 9:00 a.m. in Department 33 before the Honorable Laurel White.
