Defendants Convicted of Charges Stemming from Assaults, Kidnappings

Jullian Randle was convicted by a jury of assault with a deadly weapon, assault, kidnapping, kidnapping during a carjacking, carjacking, two counts of making criminal threats and being a felon in possession of a firearm.  The jury also found true a use of a firearm allegation. Kyle Mitts was convicted of carjacking.

On July 31, 2021, the victim was at the Robertson Community Center basketball court when Jullian Randle grabbed her and pulled her away at knife point. Randle held the victim in a headlock as he took her inside a nearby camper, where he held her for approximately four hours. During this time, Randle repeatedly punched the victim in the ribs, choked her and threatened to beat her with a mallet.  Eventually, the victim was able to escape and contact law enforcement.  On October 16, 2021, a second victim was sleeping in his car when Randle opened the car door, grabbed the victim and took him to his trailer. He then told Kyle Mitts, who was standing nearby, to drive away in the victim’s car. Inside the trailer, Randle pointed a loaded firearm at the victim’s head and ordered him to kill another homeless individual living nearby. Randle told the victim if he did not do this, he would kill him. When the victim tried to escape through a trailer window, Randle pistol-whipped him. The victim was finally able to run out of the trailer front door and flag down a police officer.

An allegation that Randle has a prior strike conviction for battery inflicting serious bodily injury will be determined at the sentencing hearing.

Randle faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. Mitts faces 9 years in prison. Sentencing is set for October 28, 2022, at 9:00 a.m. in Department 33 before the Honorable Laurel White.
