Defendant Convicted of Deadly Stabbing

DATE: August 17, 2022

CASE: Fabrizio Leal (Case #20FE004914)

PROSECUTOR: Deputy District Attorney Paris Coleman, Homicide Unit

Fabrizio Leal was convicted by a jury of the first-degree murder of Nico Carmona.  The jury also found true the allegation that Leal used a deadly weapon.

On March 11, 2020, police responded to a 911 call about a deceased person in an apartment.  When officers arrived, they found the victim on the kitchen floor. He had been wrapped in a blanket, his legs were placed in a laundry hamper, and a plastic garbage bag covered his head and shoulders.  Further investigation revealed the victim’s neck had been slashed and he’d suffered more than 25 stab wounds to his upper body.  The only people in the apartment at the time were the victim, Leal, and Leal’s 2-year-old son. Leal, who was not a resident of the apartment, admitted to stabbing the victim. The apparent murder weapon, a switchblade style knife, was recovered on scene.

Leal faces a maximum sentence of 26 years to life in prison.  Sentencing is set for October 7, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. in Department 33 before the Honorable Laurel White.
