Defendant Convicted for Shooting, Paralyzing 15-Year-Old Boy

Davonntay Jones-Carnes was convicted by a jury of attempted murder, assault with a semi-automatic firearm, carrying a concealed stolen firearm in a vehicle, and vehicle theft. The jury also found true allegations that Jones-Carnes personally and intentionally discharged a firearm causing great bodily injury and personally caused great bodily injury resulting in permanent paralysis.

On December 28, 2018, the 15-year-old victim and four other teenagers went to WinCo in Elk Grove. Several minutes later, Jones-Carnes arrived at WinCo driving a stolen car with his juvenile friend. When exiting WinCo, Jones-Carnes dropped some coins he was carrying. When he was picking them up, the victim and his friends walked by and some of them laughed.  The group of teenagers continued to their car. Jones-Carnes pulled up next to the teenagers in the stolen car, got out of the car, and fired six shots at the 15 year old with a stolen semi-automatic firearm before fleeing the scene. The victim was struck in the back two times. One of the shots damaged his vertebrae and spine, causing permanent paralysis to his lower extremities. The stolen gun used in the shooting was recovered.

Jones-Carnes faces a maximum sentence of 33 years and 4 months to life in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for December 3, 2021, in Department 22 before the Honorable Sharon Lueras.
