Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert announced the settlement of a civil enforcement case against Beauty Systems Group LLC and Sally Beauty Supply LLC for injunctive relief, civil penalties, supplemental environmental projects, and enforcement costs totaling over $1.9 million.

The case was filed in San Joaquin County, and Sacramento County joined with 41 other California District Attorneys and City Attorneys to address Sally Beauty Supply stores’ improper storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous waste products into the trash. These practices ultimately lead to the transportation to and disposal of hazardous waste in municipal landfills instead of authorized hazardous waste disposal facilities.

The judgment provides for $1.6 million in civil penalties, $25,000 in supplemental environmental projects, $289,000 in costs of enforcement, and a permanent injunction prohibiting Sally Beauty from violating hazardous materials and hazardous waste laws and requiring Sally Beauty to implement compliance assurance measures.

Sally Beauty was cooperative with the investigation and has adopted and implemented new policies and procedures and enhanced employee training to ensure proper handling and disposal of hazardous wastes.
