Defendant Convicted for Attempted Murder in Elk Grove Shooting

DATE:  June 24, 2019

CASE:  Jamaal Gooding (Case #15F07708)

PROSECUTOR:  Deputy District Attorney Jesse Saucedo, Targeting Armed Recidivist Gang Enforcement Team (TARGET)

Jamaal Gooding was convicted by a jury of attempted murder with premeditation and deliberation, and assault with a firearm.  The jury also found that Gooding personally used a firearm causing great bodily injury on both counts.

On October 31, 2015, Jamaal Gooding and the victim got into a verbal argument outside of a fast food restaurant located at Elk Grove Florin Road and Calvine Road.  During the argument, Gooding pulled out a revolver and shot the victim three times.  The victim was struck in the thigh and chest, puncturing his lung.  After the shooting, Gooding fled the scene.  Surveillance video led law enforcement to identify Gooding as the shooter.  A search of Gooding’s residence revealed similar ammunition found at the scene, and a revolver similar to the revolver described by witnesses.  A forensic analysis of Gooding’s phone revealed text messages and searches related to the shooting.

Gooding faces a maximum sentence of 32 years to life in prison.  Sentencing is set for July 12, 2019, at 9:00 a.m. in Department 19 before the Honorable Patrick Marlette.
