Defendants Convicted for Murder of Teenage Brothers

Hieu Hoang and Richard Saterfield were convicted by a jury of two counts of murder for the shooting deaths of 19-year-old Daniel Murti and 15-year-old Sergio Murti. The jury also found that both Hoang and Saterfield personally used a firearm in the course of the murders, and that both committed the special circumstance of multiple murders.
On May 11, 2017, Richard Saterfield initiated a confrontation with the victims. Saterfield obtained a gun from his vehicle and gave it to Hieu Hoang, who shot both victims. Sergio collapsed and died where he was shot. Daniel attempted to flee through a parking lot. Hoang and Saterfield got in their car and chased Daniel. Saterfield fired several additional shots at Daniel, who collapsed in the parking lot and died.
Both defendants face a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole. Sentencing is set for June 7, 2019, at 9:00 a.m. in Department 41 before the Honorable Helena Gweon.
