The Honorable Raoul Thorbourne sentenced Adrian Calderon to 35 years and 4 months in prison. On October 15, 2018, a jury convicted Calderon of attempted voluntary manslaughter with the personal use of a firearm, two counts of assault with a semi-automatic firearm and enhancements relating to using a firearm and causing great bodily injury. Calderon was also convicted of intimidating a witness and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
On August 11, 2017, Adrian Calderon was at the Parlare nightclub when he got into an argument with another patron, who took a swing at Calderon. When the club security guard went to intervene, Calderon pulled out a firearm and shot the other patron at close range. The bullet went through the security guard’s hand and into the neck of the patron, seriously injuring both victims. After Calderon was arrested and incarcerated, he had an accomplice contact the security guard to encourage him to change his story and to meet with the accomplice. The victim declined to meet with the accomplice and notified law enforcement. A subsequent investigation revealed jail calls and visits between Calderon and two accomplices detailing the plan to contact the security guard. A search of one of the accomplice’s residence uncovered a letter written by Calderon to the victim asking him to state in court he was mistaken when he identified Calderon as the shooter. The letter also offered money, help finding employment and other benefits.
An allegation that Calderon has a prior strike conviction for assault with a firearm was also found true.
