Defendant Convicted for Child Sexual Assault

CASE:  Maurice Higgs (Case #16FE017541)

PROSECUTOR:  Deputy District Attorney Bruce Chang, Special Assault & Child Abuse Unit

Maurice Higgs was convicted by a jury of three counts of child sexual assault on a child 10 years or younger, two counts of child sexual assault by force and one count of child sexual assault on a child under 14 years of age.  

Beginning February 2012 until February 2014, Maurice Higgs sexually assaulted a female child on multiple occasions when she was 5 to 7 years old.  Higgs threatened the victim on at least one occasion that he would physically harm her if she told anyone.  He eventually admitted the assaults to law enforcement.

Higgs has two prior 2003 strike convictions for robbery and making criminal threats. 

Higgs faces a maximum sentence of more than 135 years to life in prison.  Sentencing is set for June 9, 2017, at 9:00 a.m. in Department 42 before the Honorable Allen Sumner.
